Solo Safari Cameraman
Kruger National Park, South Africa
Deep in the heart of the bush, far away from the control room and under the relentless heat of summer sun, my camera skills were put to the test...in real time!
I found out very quickly that filming wildlife while live is a whole different ball game. Thankfully my academic background in zoology greatly helped as I was able to predict the animals movements, actions and behaviour, for both the viewers entertainment and for our own safety.
I learnt not only the fundamentals of how to be an effective cameraman, but also how to perform under pressure, implement instructions from the director and gained a greater understanding for a wide array of skills, techniques and equipment, i.e. camera, audio, satellite communications etc.
My favourite memory was filming wild dogs hunting and watching them take down a baby gazelle!

While working, I noticed a real lack of content that showcased the amazing team and their work. The trackers, filmmakers and naturalists play a vital part in building the immersive live safari experience, and I felt it was important to capture their work and personalities. I ensured to photograph a range of different styles and formats. You'll see I also love shooting on film.
