Freshwater & Community Conservation Externship

A global externship, bringing together changemakers from across the globe to research a freshwater issue that are impacting our local communities and communicate our findings.

I investigated the impact of urbanisation on Melbourne’s freshwater ecology and assessed its influence on the native platypus communities.

Through this experience, I enhanced my capacity to network with industry professionals, cooperate with stakeholders, employ primary and secondary research, conduct landscape/gap analyses, and I additionally taught myself GIS and ArcGIS systems.

Engaging with STEM beyond the classroom

Engagement beyond the classroom is about connecting to real-world science and experiencing how STEM is practised, how it impacts society, and why it’s worth pursuing. It’s about finding spaces that spark your curiosity, grow your network and build your skillset.

So the question is not simply how do we get people to study science, but how do we help them to engage with it in real and meaningful ways?

Little sneak peak into the articles chapters...

  • Community: The power of spaces where you can discover science

  • Support: The impact of guidance and lived experience.

  • Connections: Make coffee your best friend.

  • Professional Skills: Building capability beyond knowledge.

  • Understanding Your Why: The driving force behind why we engage in STEM.

Science Victoria Article

What draws young people into science? How do you get involved in STEM? How do you build a career in STEM? The next generation of scientists will be defined by not only what they learn, but how they engage. Brendan Cohen explains how to develop a greater sense of engagement.

Data Storytelling for Environmental Impact

Normally only exclusively open to North Americans, I told trubel&co - "I will wake up for it!”

GIS is the future of data visualisation, so it was important for me to develop my technical skills. My team and I researched the socioeconomic impact of rising sea level across five counties in Florida, USA. These insights can help guide future climate adaptation strategies and policies to be equitable, sustainable, and effective.

Research Question: Are low socioeconomic status (SES) communities in Florida disproportionately impacted by sea level rise?

Sea level rise is an escalating threat along the U.S. coastline, endangering infrastructure, housing, and coastal ecosystems. While all coastal communities face increased risk of inundation, communities of low socioeconomic states (SES) are disproportionately vulnerable.
