PLATYPUS RESEARCH
Field Research Assistant & Photographer
Melbourne, Australia
Working in the often-unseen hours of the night, freezing and wet, I joined scientists on remote field expeditions to monitor one of Australia’s most elusive species - The Platypus. Wading through dark rivers and dense vegetation, we conducted surveys, captured and tagged individuals, and collected biological samples alongside environmental DNA (eDNA) to better understand their distribution and health.
I documented the research as a photographer and videographer, capturing the moments that rarely reach the public eye. My goal was to reveal the hidden effort behind conservation research, showcasing the dedication required to generate meaningful data.
It was science at its most raw, unfiltered and physically demanding form, a deeply rewarding experience that would spark my passion for conservation photography!

Thanks to the National Geographic Society & The Nature Conservancy, I joined ecologists from EnviroDNA to investigate how Melbourne's expanding urbanisation is impacting Victoria's platypus populations. I was the filmmaker, producer, editor, *takes a breathe* and host
